Wei Qingji

Born in Qingdao in 1971, Wei Qingji is a leading member of China's experimental ink painting movement. He fuses his knowledge of traditional techniques with corporate iconography. The artist employs elements from graffiti, Pop art, and erotica to explore the confrontation between contemporary China's appetite for western materialism, and its commitment to its own rich cultural past.

In 1995, Wei graduated from the Department of Oriental Art, Nankai University with a Bachelor's degree in Chinese painting. In 2003 he graduated from the Mural Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and in 2008, the artist graduated from Wuhan University of Technology with a master's degree. Since 1995, he has been an associate professor at the Academy of Fine Arts of South China Normal University in Guangzhou. Besides multiple group exhibitions, Wei’s works were curated in his solo shows, Wei Qingji Ink Paintings, Gallery 99, Aschaffenburg, Germany, Fiction – Wei Qingji 2005 - 2007, Red Gate Gallery, Beijing, Thing - Form 2005 - 2006, Marseille III University, France, Property of Memory, High Land Gallery, Beijing, and Plotless Narrations, Plum Blossoms Gallery, Hong Kong.
